Explore Evolving Traditions: Paintings of Wonder from Japan, an exhibition of captivating works by modern artist Yuki Ideguchi alongside rarely-seen masterpieces of traditional Japanese paintings from the Embassy collection.
This exhibit takes visitors through a history of ever-evolving paintings, dating from the 6th century to the present time, whose common threads lie in the use of traditional and unique pigments, materials, and techniques. Visitors can explore these common threads through an informative opening lecture at the JICC and an open studio at the Smithsonian Freer and Sackler Galleries.
Experience the evolution of traditional Japanese paintings, the beautiful pigments and materials instrumental to their creation, and the perspectives of Japanese aesthetic principles and motifs that underlie both the old and the modern.
