Shared Pastimes & the Story of U.S.-Japan Baseball
2018 Japan Information & Culture Center Summer Exhibition
2018 Exhibit Design || Exhibition designs (+ window decal, collectible menko cards, & selfie panels) for the JICC’s 2018 summer exhibition celebrating baseball diplomacy between Japan and the U.S. The basis of a menko (Japanese baseball card) was used for publicity efforts. A limited-edition five-set menko card set was created, and each one was distributed at every lecture and film event held in relation to the exhibition. Additionally, four large-size menko cut-outs were designed to allow the audience for a fun photo-op opportunity.

To celebrate the 2018 Major League Baseball All-Star Game coming to Washington, DC this summer, the JICC, Embassy of Japan, together with the Gordon W. Prange Collection, University of Maryland Libraries, and Japanese baseball specialist, Adam Berenbak, will present an exhibition from June 13 to August 10 to celebrate the bonds between the U.S. and Japan forged through the game of baseball.
Featuring baseball related historical objects and artifacts from Japan, the exhibition will trace the history of the sport in Japan, from its introduction and rapid transformation into Japan’s national sport, as well as explore the fascinating history of sports exchange and “baseball diplomacy” between Japan and the U.S. – avenues of contact that have fostered friendship, goodwill, and reconciliation between the two nations.
